Sencha green tea
Sencha is the most popular green tea in Japan, accounting for over 50% of national production. Harvested and then quickly steamed, sencha leaves retain their intense green color, vegetal aromas, and natural health benefits. Rolled into fine needles, they offer an infusion that is fresh, balanced, and invigorating.
Sourced from various terroirs and cultivars, sencha comes in a wide range of flavors, where sweetness and astringency harmonize perfectly. A must-have for lovers of Japanese green tea.
🍃 Sencha green tea: uses, benefits, preparation
A brief historical overview
Sencha is relatively young compared to matcha tea . Its development (though not its invention) took place in 1738 in the village of Ujitawara, near Kyoto, by Nagatani Sōen. The first description of sencha green tea production appears in 1827 in Takano Chōei's book, " Tea Culture and Production in Japan." However, this new tea was already being referred to in other works as "green tea" or "Uji-style tea," and was quickly recognized as a high-quality tea.
The benefits of Sencha green tea
Sencha green tea is rich in polyphenols (catechins), tannins, L-theanine, as well as vitamins (especially C and E) and amino acids.
Antioxidant activity : Sencha contains a high concentration of catechins, including EGCG. These effects contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Moderate stimulant effect : Thanks to its moderate caffeine content and the presence of L-theanine, Sencha improves cognitive alertness while promoting relaxation and reducing psychological stress.
Oral health : Thanks to its antibacterial properties, sencha green tea reduces the proliferation of oral bacteria responsible for tooth decay, while limiting salivary acidity and plaque formation.
Cardiovascular effects : Several studies suggest that green tea helps lower blood pressure.
Much has been written about sencha and teas in general, so we encourage you to be cautious about all health claims. Research on the effects of tea still has much to uncover, and above all, tea will never replace a healthy diet and lifestyle.
